Brazilian Tales

I was interested to read some works by Machado de Assis: my friend Filipe Ponzi (a young Brazilian from Caxias do Sul with whom I share a passion for quality cinema, particularly for the films of Kuleshov) had told me about this author as one of the greatest. I was thinking to start with one or two of his short stories, to get a first grasp of Machado's world. Here another friend came to help (also a Brazilian, Pedro Lima, teaching Spanish and Portuguese in Maceió). He suggested a collection of Brazilian stories, containing some short-prose by Machado, among other authors.

The collection was edited by Flávio Moreira da Costa (Brazilian novelist, storyteller, essayist and anthologist) and published by Ediouro in 2009: Os Melhores contos Brasileiros de todos os Tempos. Machado was there with seven short stories. Actually a separate chapter of the collection was dedicated uniquely to him (the other authors were grouped following some thematic or stylistic criteria).

All this looked fine, but one thing: I could advance in a Portuguese text only very slowly, having in parallel a translation, let's say in Spanish, and trying some correspondences, to the point that I was no more sure which of the two tongues I was actually learning. To say nothing that this was Brazilian Portuguese, probably using copiously all kind of regionalisms and very local slang.

Soon I found another collection of Brazilian Tales, this time translated into English.

It was a book from 1921, printed in Boston by The Four Seas Company, a publishing house that ceased its existence sometime in the early 1920's (most probably in 1923, as far as I could find out on the web). Editor and translator was Isaac Goldberg, a Harvardian man of letters, historian of Latino-American literature, fluent in Yiddish, Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Portuguese (wow!). The book was dedicated to J.D.M. Ford (a Harvard professor of French and Spanish, and Chairman of the Department of Romance Languages, between 1911-1943).

The copy belonged to the Public Library of the City of Boston. It was worn-out, looking extremely fragile (no wonder, as it had been used since 1921) and the library had needed to put inside a warning label for future readers. Hand annotations could be seen here and there throughout the pages. That was giving a nice familiar look to this collection of Brazilian Tales. You see, a book continues its life long time after it is printed, passing from a reader to another, advancing along generations, and each one adds a tiny bit to the story. And then, after years, when opening such an antiquated copy, it is something beyond the story the book is about, you feel like a quiet murmur, coming from the untold stories of all those who had it browsed. And your own sensibility is added in turn, over many layers of sensibility left there through the years.

(source: Brazilian Tales, Boston 1921)

There were six tales in the book, three of them written by Machado de Assis (The Attendant's Confession, The Fortune-Teller, and Life). The other three were respectively by José Medeiros e Albuquerque (The Vengeance of Felix), Coelho Neto (The Pigeons) and Carmen Dolores (Aunt Zeze's Tears). All authors belonging to the Brazilian belle époque.

Some of these stories had previously appeared in two Bostonian newspapers (Boston Evening Transcript and Stratford Journal). Now they were gathered in this collection, seemingly a pioneering volume, since the need of an introduction, placed in front of the six stories. Actually this introduction was a comprehensive study authored by Isaac Goldberg: a presentation of the four authors included in the collection, an analysis of their works and of the context they had activated within, influences on them coming from other authors, Brazilians or from the world literature, then an outline of the entire history of Brazilian literature, and a discussion about its distinct persona versus European Portuguese. Here the opinion of Goldberg was coming against some other specialists. For example José Veríssimo, a noted Brazilian man of letters, had doubted whether the existence of an entirely independent literature would have been possible without an entirely independent language. The opinion of Goldberg was radically opposite: more than one single literature can exist within the same tongue, the national life making the difference as much as the national language. And he was concluding that a book like Alencar's O Guarany could not have been written outside of Brazil; and neither Veríssimo's own Cenas da Vida Amazônica.

I read all six stories one after another without leaving the book. Each one kept my interest and made me curious to go to the next one. I don't want to spoil them, so I would limit myself just to a few remarks.

Machado's The Attendant's Confession impressed me the most. It's a piece of rare virtuosity. Just a few pages and all contradictions coexisting in the human soul are explored up to their ultimate expression. Fear down to horrible terror, acceptance of your destiny, revolt against it up to committing murder, deep remorse followed by hypocrite self-embellishment of your conscience and continuing your life, bits of remorse pinching you now and then, suppressing them and going on. Realizing with horror that the story is about yourself! Dostoyevsky was coming to my mind, then the whole setting sent me rather to Poe. But it's Machado: you have the paradoxical impression of several opposite stories seamlessly woven together, all this controlled by the author with a sure hand, with a great sense of keeping the balance and not letting any strident note.

A parallel with the technique of Poe can also be made for two other stories from the collection, one by Machado (The Fortune-Teller) and the other by Medeiros e Albuquerque (The Vengeance of Felix). Both are good in their own right (though maybe showing their age), but The Attendant's Confession is a masterpiece. As to Machado's third work included in the collection (Life), frankly I need to know much more of what he wrote to be able to place it somewhere in his universe.

About Coelho Neto's The Pigeons I have already written my impressions here. For me it suggested an essential synchronicity inside nature, humans and the environment following the same rhythms, humans and animals as pairs; this going maybe even further, among all forms of life; a synchronicity that reveals itself especially in the ultimate moments, when all we have proudly believed about us goes away and what remains is just the biological truth. And also the meaning of tradition, this bag of apparently absurd superstitions, as a treasure coming from the very beginnings of humanity, when our understanding of surrounding nature was unaltered by civilization.

And now about the last story of the collection (Aunt Zeze's Tears, by Carmen Dolores). It adds to this corpus a feminine presence, telling us something about the level of sophistication reached by the Brazilian literature of that period. Carmen Dolores' activity as short story writer, novelist and journalist covered the whole half part of 19th century. Aunt Zeze's Tears is the story of a spinster, living a joyless life confined to the limits of keeping a brother's household, a quiet domestic tragedy masterfully told with poignancy and restraint.

Maiakovkskiene: Apucaţi viitorul de chică, 1925

(source: sovlit)
no copyright infringement intended

Viitorul, el singur, o să vină prea-ncet.
Să-l aducem mai iute nu strică.
Prinde-l, dar, de urechi, tineret!
Pionierule, apucă-l de chică!
Nu-i crăiasa din basme comuna,
să visezi nopţi de-a rândul la ea.
Tu socoate, gândeşte-te-ntruna,
şi nici faptele mici nu uita.
Comunismul nu-i numai pământul,
numai munca din fabrici... E la masă, aci,
şi-n familia ta şi-ntre-ai tăi, învăţându-l
şi-n viaţa de fiece zi.
Pot mitralierele frontul să-l ţină,
războiul nu doar la atât se rezumă.
Nici problema căminului nu ni-i străină:
nici cu ea nu-i de glumă.
Cel care în silă răspunde la toate,
bârâind toată ziua, scârţâind fără spor,
cel care sucombă-n cântări leşinate,
acela nu ştie ce e viitor.
Problema căminului cine nu-şi pune
se culcă-ntre flori de hârtie;
la poarta vieţii de mâine-o să sune
zadarnic. Nu-l ştie.
O şubă-i şi vremea - de-o ţii în odaie -
mâncată de molia felului vieţii...
Tu scutură-i vremii-nvechitele straie
şi, tânăr, fii steag tinereţii!

New Englander novelist (The Scarlet Letter, The House of the Seven Gables, The Blithedale Romance, The Marble Faun: Or, The Romance of Monte Beni - known also by its British title, Transformation) and short story writer (Twice-Told Tales, The Whole History of Grandfather's Chair, Mosses from an Old Manse); a Dark Romanticist inspired by the Puritan universe, focused on the inherent evil of humanity, creator of personages of deep psychological complexity; also wrote a biography of President Franklin Pierce (raising the inevitable question: how could one of the greatest American writers produce a biography of one of the worst US presidents? I found in Slate some explanations on that); for Henry James (who wrote about Hawthorne a short sketch having rather the form of a critical essay than of a biography) he has the importance of being the most beautiful and most eminent representative of a literature, a master of expression, the writer to whom his countrymen most confidently point when they wish to make a claim to have enriched the mother-tongue.

Deus fez-me atravessar o teu caminho...
— Que contas dás a Deus indo sozinho,
Passando junto a mim, sem me encontrares?

Privește-mă, iubitul meu drag, iară:
Cu ochii tăi de aur mă desfată,
De sărutări și dragoste-s avară
Și lasă numărarea ne’ncheiată.

Iar dacă ochii-mi sunt ca piatra rară,
Doar fericirea, al tău bine cată;

- Tantos escolhos! Quem podia vê-los? –
Deitei-me ao mar e não salvei nenhuma!

Perdi a minha taça, o meu anel,
A minha cota de aço, o meu corcel,
Perdi meu elmo de ouro e pedrarias...

Sobem-me aos lábios súplicas estranhas...
Sobre o meu coração pesam montanhas...
Olho assombrada as minhas mãos vazias...

M-am aruncat în val; nu le-am salvat!

Pierdut-am cupa și al meu inel,
Pierdut-am calul, zalele de-oțel
Și coiful meu bătut cu pietre mii…

Îmi vin pe buze rugăminți străine…
Mi-e inima strivită sub coline…
Privesc uimită mâinile-mi pustii...

Jonathan Sheehan, On the Predestination Doctrine of Calvin

Portrait de Jean Calvin jeune
École flamande, huile sur panneau, 15 ou 16ème siècle
Bibliothèque publique et universitaire Genève
(source: wikimedia)
no copyright infringement intended

All are not created on equal terms, but some are preordained to eternal life, others to eternal damnation; and, accordingly, as each has been created for one or other of these ends, we say that he has been predestinated to life or to death.

I read about Calvin's doctrine of predestination while in school, and naturally I was struck by what I perceived as venomous arrogance and meanness. And later in life I was surprised by the formidable openness I discovered in so many Reformed churches that I had the occasion to visit, in various countries. I tried to clarify this absurd dichotomy, in discussion with friends I made in some Reformed communities, also I tried to get it in some books of history or theology dedicated to the subject. I did not advance too much in my understanding. I knew very little about all this, but I believed that the modern openness of the Reformed religion should have its spring in Calvin's teachings; maybe not in the spirit of the man, rather, against his own ego, in the potentialities of his doctrine. Then, how was it possible that Dieu adopte certains à l'espoir de la vie et adjuge les autres à la mort éternelle?

I found an interesting explanation in an essay written by Jonathan Sheehan and published two days ago in NY Times (Teaching Calvin in California). I will quote from it:

Calvin was the most influential religious reformer of the 16th century. His theological imagination and organizational genius prepared the way for almost all forms of American Protestantism, from the Presbyterians to the Methodists to the Baptists. He was also a severe and uncompromising thinker. “Some are born destined for certain death from the womb, who glorify God’s name by their own destruction.” This is the heart of Calvin’s teaching of predestination, his insistence that God determined each human destiny before the creation of the world. The elect are bound for heaven, the reprobate to hell, and there is absolutely nothing to be done about it, ever. How can so much arrogant misanthropy pass itself off as piety? What kind of God is this, that took pleasure in creating man so that he might be condemned to everlasting damnation? “Follow me,” Christ said, and doesn’t that mean that we are asked to choose, that the choice between death and salvation is a free one?

After all, Calvin anticipated these objections, since they were raised in his day, too. He dedicated a whole chapter to dismissing the “insolence” of the human understanding when it “hears these things.” He knew that our first reactions would be anger and denial, that we would be baffled by predestination. So he demanded that his readers, then and now, think alongside him. His argument goes like this: If God alone created all things, doesn’t that mean that he did so freely? If he is free in his choices, how can it be otherwise than that God himself determines our fates, right to the edges of hell? [interesting: free will of God rather than free will of human - my note] Once you grant the first premise — that there is no God besides God and that he made the universe — reason itself apparently requires we assent to this terrible thought. [the argument is developed also - while from a totally different perspective - in Yuval Noah Harari's Sapience; I should present it in a later post - my note] “Monstrous indeed is the madness of men, who desire to subject the immeasurable to the puny measure of their own reason,” Calvin exclaimed.

Human reason seeks to subject God to itself, but predestination tells us that we cannot. Confronting the doctrine of predestination is a kind of psychological experiment. Nothing else can “suffice to make us as humble as we ought to be” as “a taste of this doctrine” of predestination, as Calvin put it. Exactly here, in this rejection and anger, Calvin insists, you finally feel in your gut the greatness of God. You finally feel the difference between his Majesty and your limitation.

The first lesson that Calvin teaches us is about the power of an idea, uncompromisingly expressed and shrewdly argued. The second lesson Calvin teaches us, secular and religious, is this: Be careful what you believe in. Consider the consequences of your commitments. Investigate what your own views demand. These are lessons neither of secular reason nor of Christian reason. They are lessons about reasoning itself. Do we think that the world has a purpose and an order? If it does, where do they come from? If it doesn’t, what does a meaningful life look like? If we believe in a God, where does that belief drive us? If we don’t, what kinds of commitments do we actually have?

I will come back to this [just one more note: maybe a discussion about prescience versus predestination would be needed - here a short quote from Calvin, ch.21: Certain cavils against the doctrine. Prescience regarded as the cause of predestination. Prescience and predestination explained. Not prescience, but the good pleasure of God the cause of predestination. This apparent from the gratuitous election of the posterity of Abraham and the rejection of all others].

For now, you can read the whole essay at:

Anii noştri s-au socotit ca pânza unui păianjen; zilele anilor noştri sunt şaptezeci de ani;
şi ce este mai mult decât aceştia osteneală şi durere;
Că trece viaţa noastră şi ne vom duce.

The days of our years are threescore years and ten;
and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years,
yet is their strength labour and sorrow;
for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

Et, pour les plus robustes, à quatre-vingts ans;

und wenn's köstlich gewesen ist, so ist es Mühe und Arbeit gewesen;

а при большей крепости-- восемьдесят лет;

A duração da nossa vida é de setenta anos;
a medida deles é canseira e enfado;
pois passa rapidamente, e nós voamos.

Los días de nuestra edad son setenta años;
y de los más valientes, ochenta años,
y su fortaleza es molestia y trabajo;

Passo no mundo, meu Amor, a ler
No misterioso livro do teu ser
A mesma história tantas vezes lida!…

Tudo no mundo é frágil, tudo passa
Quando me dizem isto, toda a graça

Ah! Pot să piară lumi și astre-odată,
Căci ești ca Domnul: început, sfârșit!

Musica Ricercata (Ligeti) - Juan Pérez Floristán

Musica ricercata is a set of eleven pieces for piano by György Ligeti. The work was composed from 1951 to 1953. The work premiered on 18 November 1969 in Sundsvall, Sweden. Although the ricercata (or ricercar) is an established contrapuntal style (and the final movement of the work is in that form), Ligeti's title should probably be interpreted literally as researched music or sought music. This work captures the essence of Ligeti's search to construct his own compositional style ex nihilo, and as such presages many of the more radical directions Ligeti would take in the future (wiki).

É correr as cortinas

O único mistério é haver quem pense no mistério.

«Sentido íntimo do Universo»...

Dizendo-me, Aqui estou!

Então acredito nele a toda a hora,

Chamo-lhe flores e árvores e montes e sol e luar;
Porque, se ele se fez, para eu o ver,
Sol e luar e flores e árvores e montes,

Obedeço-lhe a viver, espontaneamente,
Como quem abre os olhos e vê,
E chamo-lhe luar e sol e flores e árvores e montes,
E amo-o sem pensar nele,
E penso-o vendo e ouvindo,
E ando com ele a toda a hora.

„Alcătuirea lăuntrică a lucrurilor”…

Îl numesc flori și copaci și munți și soare și lună;

Tornado outra vez menino,
A correr e a rolar-se pela erva
E a arrancar flores para as deitar fora
E a rir de modo a ouvir-se de longe.

Tinha fugido do céu.
E que não era pai dele;
A única pomba feia do mundo
Pregasse a bondade e a justiça!

Um dia que Deus estava a dormir
E o Espírito Santo andava a voar,
Colhe as flores e gosta delas e esquece-as.
Atira pedras aos burros,
Rouba a fruta dos pomares
E foge a chorar e a gritar dos cães.
E, porque sabe que elas não gostam
E que toda a gente acha graça,
Corre atrás das raparigas pelas estradas
Que vão em ranchos pela estradas
com as bilhas às cabeças
E levanta-lhes as saias.

A mim ensinou-me tudo.
Ensinou-me a olhar para as cousas.

Sempre a escarrar no chão
E a dizer indecências.

.........................................................

Ele mora comigo na minha casa a meio do outeiro.

Parece falar comigo.

A Criança Nova que habita onde vivo
Dá-me uma mão a mim
Saltando e cantando e rindo
E gozando o nosso segredo comum
Que é o de saber por toda a parte
Que não há mistério no mundo
E que tudo vale a pena.

A Criança Eterna acompanha-me sempre.

E deito-o, despindo-o lentamente
E como seguindo um ritual muito limpo
E todo materno até ele estar nu.
Ele dorme dentro da minha alma
E às vezes acorda de noite
E brinca com os meus sonhos.
Vira uns de pernas para o ar,
Põe uns em cima dos outros
E bate as palmas sozinho
Sorrindo para o meu sono.

.........................................................

Quando eu morrer, filhinho,
Seja eu a criança, o mais pequeno.
Pega-me tu ao colo
E leva-me para dentro da tua casa.
Despe o meu ser cansado e humano
E deita-me na tua cama.
E conta-me histórias, caso eu acorde,
Para eu tornar a adormecer.
E dá-me sonhos teus para eu brincar
Até que nasça qualquer dia
Que tu sabes qual é.

.........................................................

Esta é a história do meu Menino Jesus.
Por que razão que se perceba
Não há de ser ela mais verdadeira
Que tudo quanto os filósofos pensam
E tudo quanto as religiões ensinam?

……………………………………………………………………….
Când am să mor, fiul meu,
Să fiu eu copilul, cel mai mic.
Ia-mă în brațele tale
Și du-mă înăuntru, în casă ta
Dezbracă-mi ființa ostenită și omenească
Și culcă-mă în patul tău.
Spune-mi povești, dacă mă trezesc,
Ca să adorm din nou.
Dă-mi visele tale ca să mă joc
Până ce se ivesc zorii oricărei zilei
Știi tu care zi anume.
