Musica Nova

Arvo, Teiji, James, Conlon.

Arvo Pärt

Arvo Pärt is an Estonian. Born in 1935. Started by composing serial music. Then, for a long period he did not compose any more. He felt that serial music was not his road, that he should look for something else.

So he searched his own way: Renascentist music, Gregorian cant, Orthodox liturgical music. He started to compose again in 1977: Summa, Fratres, Magnificat, Christmas Antiphons, the Beatitudes... and many others. Spiegel im Spiegel, Festina Lente. Choral music, chamber music... I'm listening some amazing works: a CD that came to me from England: now I realize what Minimalism means in music... only one sound, well chosen, that's enough... then silence, to give you space to meditate that only sound. And quiet development of music, with few sounds, and with periods of silence, filled deeply with music.

Teiji Ito
Teiji Ito was born in Japan, lived in New York. No regular musical studies. Only he knew to play any instrument, whatever weird, whatever new for him, Nippon flutes, bottles with water, drums, marimba, toy pianos, fish scales, anything. He knew also how to process the magnetic tape, so he was composing for each instrument (mainly exotic instruments, from Japan or Latin America). then he was performing on each instrument and recording. And after processing the records, the outcome was polyphony. He scored two movies of Maya Deren, so he became known, Then he composed a genial suite, Ubu King, then Teno... and much more, only these ones are available on market.

Ubu King is crazily amazing. Each part is coming unexpectedly: you think you are in Japan, at a Kabuki theater, the next part brings you somewhere on Bolivian plateaus, the next one takes you in a bar in Argentina, and you are listening an emotional tango. Then comes the next part that leaves you in a basement in SoHo, among drunkards, listening kind of a blues, performed at a weird instrument, a toy piano accompanied by bottles full of water.

He died relatively young, on one of his travels in Haiti.

James Tenney

James Tenney: Hodos, Meta Hodos, Meta Meta Hodos. Ergodic music. Hodos means road. The road for Musica Nova. Meta Hodos is the method for this road. Meta Meta Hodos formalizes the method. Ergos is the work you are doing on the Hodos, on the road of Musica Nova.

Conlon Nancarrow was the wizard of the player-piano: working one year for five minutes of music. The purity of harpsichord. Jazz structured by counterpoint. Actually much, much more: his counterpoint is phenomenal. His studies for player-piano are Das Wohltemperierte Clavier of the twentieth century.

Tracing György Ligeti: Musica Ricercata

Mesto rigido e cerimoniale

The music on the video is played on a prepared piano. I listened to another record of the same work played at bayan.

György Ligeti composed Musica Ricercata in 1951 - 1953: a set of piano pieces often compared with Bartok's Mikrokosmos. But Ligeti's road took him far ahead: he is one of the great masters of contemporary polyphony.

Born in 1923 in Romania, in a region mixed ethnically (Transylvania). People in his birth town were speaking exclusively Hungarian. As a small kid, he was not aware about the existence of another language, so he was totally surprised hearing two cops speaking Romanian. It was only in the secondary school when he started to learn the official language of the country. He lived then in Hungary, and after the 1956 Revolution in Austria.

However, Romanian musical spirit had an immense impact on his work.

I am not considering only his Concert Romanesc (Romanian Concerto), with its echoes of bucium (alpenhorn) : it is a great musical work and it reminds me the Prelude at Unison of Enescu (and of course his Rhapsodies).

I am also not only considering his piano study, Coloana Infinita, a superb musical translation of Brancusi's masterpiece.

I found the Romanian matrix even in one of his most modern works, in Lontano!

Ligeti is the constructor of a new universe, the micropolyphony, and the spirit of Romanian music is one of its dimensions.

Well, some would ask how is it possible that a kid who was virtually ignorant of the Romanian language could absorb later so intensely the Romanian music?

I think it is about his musical acuity. He did not know Romanian, but he was seeing Romanian shepherds and was aware of the sounds of bucium and cimpoi (bagpipe). I would say that he did not invent the universe of micropolyphony; he discovered it in the Romanian musical structures. He would come for a short period in 1949 to Bucharest, at the Institute for Ethnography and Folklore, to listen carefully the recordings made by Brailoiu and other Romanian researchers. And later he would discover the micropolyphony in other popular cultures, in Africa: he would work all his life to find this universe, to understand and to organize it.

Till leaving Hungary in 1956 Ligeti followed the roads of Bartok and Kodaly. After that he met the works of some great modern composers, like Stockhausen (much later it would be the encounter with the player-piano studies of Nancarrow). It was the moment he realized what should be his own road.

Apparitions is the moment of breaking with the tonal music. It scandalized the attendance, as Hernani was a scandal in the first quarter of the nineteen century. It was a brutal manifesto: from now on the rule of three units was over in music too! Think at the gesture of Luther, breaking the Papal Bull....

The video that follows is a fragment from Apparitions: the author of the video is suggesting by his images a link to Un Chien Andalou of Bunuel and Dali: the moment of breaking with the old age of cinema!

After the moment of breaking with the old universe, Ligeti started to organize the new one. Atmosphères followed Apparitions. I did not find any video for Atmospheres: I am sad for this, as I wanted to share with you the strange beauty of that piece. There is neither melodic line there, nor rhythmic, only timbre and volume variations. If you don't like it, think at this: isn't it beautiful the rustle of leaves in the wood? The rustle of wind? The noise of a snowstorm?

Speaking about snowstorm, here is a fragment from his Lux Aeterna:

And the author of the video notes: A snowstorm broke suddenly while I was listening to Ligeti's music... a spooky atmosphere!

And this is what micropolyphony is about: the noise of snowstorm, the sudden flap of a spook, the rustle of wind through the leaves in summer, the sound of some African drums, the apparition of masked youngsters dancing strangely on New Year celebrations in some distant countryside in Transylvania, the sudden entrance of a cimpoi, the echo of bucium!

Contele Herosmonte

Peste vreo săptămână prietena mamei mi-a dăruit câteva creioane colorate.

A murit acum câţiva ani, i-am zis.

Contele fusese adus in România când era mic.

A scos o carte.

I woke up one morning to find a city of ice. Everything was white and the branches of the trees were sparkling.

I spent the day at home. I went out for a walk in the evening. The playground nearby was a fairy tale. I tried two photos, one with the auto flash, another without flash.

Bucharest: the small Paris hiding the small Phanar, the city of the Avant-Garde of the twenties, the city of the apartment buildings of the long years of Communism, the city of the present: dynamic and contrastant, crazy, noisy, beautiful and ugly, always surprising, always unexpected. A Hong Kong waiting for his Chris Doyle.

That day it was a city of hoar frost.

Micul Stambul

Hanul lui Manuc vazut dinspre Piata Unirii
Hanul lui Manuc vazut dinspre Piata Unirii

Mi-am petrecut cea mai mare parte a vietii in Bucuresti. Am devenit washingtonian de vreo cinci ani de abia. Si oricum, ma voi intoarce in Romania.

In copilarie am invatat ca Bucurestiul era Micul Paris.

Orasul ascunde in el ceva mult mai statornic.

-------------------------------

I came to spend three weeks of vacation in Bucharest, Romania. Here are my first impressions.

I spent most part of my life in Bucharest - I became a Washingtonian only five years ago. Anyway, I intend to return to Romania.

As a child, I learned that Bucharest was a small Paris. For many years I thought that this was an exaggeration - but after one week spent in Paris, I realized that many streets of Bucharest had really a Parisian air - and anyway, there were a lot of styled houses, looking greatly Parisian.

Piata Amzei: Casa Mitzei Biciclista langa casele Bratienilor
Piata Amzei: Casa Mitzei Biciclista, langa casele Bratienilor

Only this Parisian air was much younger than Bucharest - and the city was hiding something that was much older: in its churches, perhaps in some of its neighborhoods, in very few houses - actually there was a spirit of the place - even if those old neighborhoods had vanished, the spiritus loci was there, hidden, waiting to be discovered.

Biserica Amzei

Bucharest was also a small Istanbul (or maybe a small Phanar). The spirit is still in its small Eastern Orthodox churches, and not only: once I saw in a Turkish restaurant on the 18th Street a large photograph of a modern plaza in Istanbul. Well, the whole was very much alike with the modern structure of Unirii Plaza in Bucharest. The same structure: the buildings, the green spaces, were organized the same way, creating the same path for the light.

Today's NY Times: Two Chinese Movies

Today's NYTimes reviews two Chinese movies, Still Life and Summer Palace.

Still Life: The blood and the sweat run directly into the Yangtze River, where they mingle with more than a few tears. The movie takes place amid the clatter and misery of the Three Gorges Dam, which cuts across the Yangtze in central China. The largest dam in the world, Three Gorges is a site of great cultural and political strife because of both environmental and humanitarian concerns. More than one million people have been displaced because of the dam (more are expected to follow), evicted from their homes by a ravenous hunger for power, electric and otherwise, that is washing them and history away. A modern master of postmodern discontent, Jia Zhang-ke is among the most strikingly gifted filmmakers working today whom you have probably never heard of. (Manohla Dargis)

Summer Palace: Yu Hong (Lei Hao) reflects that her college years were the “most confused” time in her life. A lot of us might feel similarly, but Yu Hong, the beautiful and passionate heroine of this beautiful and passionate film, is something of a special case. Yu Hong arrives in Beijing in 1988, and her first year at the university, already full of emotional and sexual upheaval, ends with the pro-democracy demonstrations in Tiananmen Square and their violent suppression by the Chinese government. Summer Palace, which was first shown in competition at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival, is remarkable for its candor about politics and sex. (A. O. Scott)

Deocamdata asez aici numai doua fotografii.

Si iata-le in Bucuresti, locurile acestea de Paris vechi.

I was in Bucharest a couple of weeks ago and I made perhaps more than three hundred photos. But this post is about photos of old Bucharest.

I received a gift, from my good friends, Gabi and Ovidiu. More than a hundred of old photos from Bucharest: streets, boulevards, houses, palaces, churches, traditions, commerce, crafts, everything. Images from the beginning of the twentieth century, images from the years between the world wars... The small Phanar rediscovered through them, mixed with the Bucharest of the Avant-Garde.

I knew many of these photos - still some were new for me. They look crazily cool, as they show a Bucharest just passing from the old Phanar to the modern era. I will come later on them.

Now, just two of these photos. Enjoy.

Teeth - a Movie Photographed by Wolfgang Held

Teeth will open on January 18 in New York and Los Angeles, and then nationwide on the weekend that follows.

This indie horror/comedy achieved instant cult status at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. Exploring the vagina dentata myth, Teeth tells the story of high school student Dawn (Jessica Weixler, who won Best Actress at Sundance for this role), who is the head of her school's chastity program and a stranger to her own body. After being assaulted by her ideal guy, Dawn learns - in a shocking scene that has to be seen to be believed - she has a toothed vagina, says Wolfgang Held, the director of photography for this movie.

Here's the trailer:

And here are some comments from viewers: Laugh out loud, Brilliant film, brilliantly acted by Jess Weixler, Hilarious and satisfying, If you thought vagina dentata was a myth, you've clearly never been to the American Bible Belt, Not something to get your teeth stuck into, Great horror / comedy, Oh my God, etc, etc.

And you cand find also some less enthusiastic comments, as: Ehhh... mildly interesting... even Another Sundance Stinker (amateurish at best)

One of the folks who saw the movie is probably right anyway: Not a date movie. That's true, vagina dentata is not the kind of stuff to make you confident...

The Five Most Important Books for Khaled Hosseini

(source: goodreads)
no copyright infringement intended

Khaled Hosseini is the author of The Kite Runner and of A Thousand Splendid Suns. He gave his list of five most important books in the most recent issue of Newsweek. Here is his top, and his reasons:
  1. Shahnameh: the jewel of Persian literature
  2. The Qur'an: hypnotically poetic
  3. The Bible: even Harry Potter can't compete with its sales
  4. The Origin of Species: the primary model for the diversity of life on earth
  5. Crime and Punishment: no novel captures isolation, guilt, spiritual unraveling and salvation like it

Khaled Hosseini is a physician and a novelist: so he belongs to a blessed family: Saint Luke, Chekhov, Cronin, Axel Munthe, Baranga, Galina Nikolaeva - they wrote their books with that unique insight that comes from the deep experience with human suffering.

Khaled Hosseini belongs to more than one cultural space: he was born in Kabul, spent some years of his childhood in Tehran, then in Paris, has lived in the United States since he was fifteen.

His choice of most important books speaks much about his background, both scientific and humanist, both Asian and Euro-American. Shahnameh, witnessing an ancient civilization in all its splendor, offering the frame for our civilization, where we come from. The Qu'ran and the Bible, offering the frame for understanding the diversity of the spirit. The Origin of Species, offering the frame for understanding the diversity of the material universe. Crime and Punishment, offering the frame for understanding the individual. Universe of civilization, universe of spirit, universe of matter, universe of individual.

The comparison between Bible and Harry Potter seems at first view irreverent. Actually, some people consider Harry Potter as a metaphor for the history of civilization.

His choice for Shahnameh, the book of Persian Kings: maybe a discreet preference for Asia in the endless match with Europe: the wars between Persia and Greece, the wars between Islam and Christianity, the endless match.

And compare his reasons for the Qu'ran, his reasons for the Bible: maybe again a discreet preference for Orient in his endless match with the Occident. Anyway, he considers them together: the spirit is fundamentally diverse.

History, religion, science, Shahnameh, Qu'ran/Bible, Origin of Species: the Holly Book is not a manual of history or a manual of science; the manual of history and the manual of science are not Holly Books. We need them all to understand the universe.

And, above all, Crime and Punishment: above the universe, we as individuals. Even if we understood the whole, the universe, it wouldn't be enough; even it would be nothing, without understanding the unique.

A Life in Books

I read almost all books of Ryszard Kapuściński. This one impressed me the most. When Kapuscinski forgets that he is a journalist, he is Hemingway and Marquez in the same time. The Soccer War is the masterpiece of a wizard.

hiti

Honest up to the end in the self discovery of his morbid attraction for the cruelty of war. The morbid hiding in each of us: there are no innocents in a war.

Such a bibliophile beauty that even the harshest atheist would start to believe.

It is impossible to explain its bounding spell: you cannot explain the ineffable.

This is a book of sand: you open it each time on other page and you are lost there in an instant. No way of return, only fake detours.
